Laser Gum Bleaching

The most common reason of darker gums is  genetics. Excess melanin pigment can accumulate in the gums, looking brown or black instead of natural pink. As a result, it is more common in certain ethnic groups like African or Middle Eastern.

Other causes for dark gums include smoking, side effects from certain medications, and amalgam tattoo in the gum.

Global Dental Complex is one of a few dental centers offering Laser Gum Bleaching (Depigmentation)

What is the healing time following laser gum depigmentation?

Normally, it is minor discomfort and no complications after the treatment. You can expect to be able to speak and eat like normal after the treatment is done.

Gum completely heals in about 2 weeks .

The Pictures you see on our Gallery are all patients that had review appointment 2 weeks after the treatment.

How long does the gum stay pink?

It can last up to a lifetime. However, smoking and some medications can cause recurrence of dark pigment.

How long is the laser gum bleaching treatment?

The laser gum depigmentation procedure usually takes 30-60  minutes. We normally give you topical anesthetic without injection to make the procedure as comfortable as possible .

How does the treatment work?

Laser gum depigmentation vaporizes and removes a thin top layer of the gum tissue, destroying the cells that produce melanin. As new tissue is created during healing, it tends to be pink rather than brown. Sometime depending on the colour and depth of the dark area, it could take several sessions to achieve the desired pink colour.

Am I a candidate for this procedure?

The main indication is the gums must be healthy. We can assess your gum and oral health with our periodontist or gum doctor.

This treatment is not suitable for:

  • Patients with active oral lesion
  • Patients on blood thinners (it can cause excessive bleeding)
  • Patients with thin gum tissue or prominent tooth roots (it can cause ongoing sensitivity if roots are accidentally exposed by the removal of gum tissue)
